about

This first album is the brainchild of Brooklyn’s Mike “Price Tag” Preis. With music created on an MC-909 sequencer (literally a Roland sequencer from the 90’s) Mike has created a sound that transports you back in time to the suburbs of Chicago where a younger nerdy version of him grew up. A time when hip hop, pop, independent rock, and grunge were dominating the radio waves and video sphere of MTV and VH1. It was a time when multiple music genres started merging and the lines between Pop/Hip Hop/Rock were blurring. Mike describes conjuring his teenage self as the inspiration for the album.

The completion of this album and how Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh got involved actually hinged upon a whole lot of kismet, and a friendship between a dog and a pig. Yes - only in New York City. It was a bizarre interspecies friendship the likes of YouTube viral clickbait that gets us clambering down the rabbit hole. It began when Jason and his pig Emmet (yes Jason had a pig, and he was amazing! R.I.P. Emmet) moved down the block from Mike and his dog Brindy (a little brindle pit bull). It was obvious from the start that Brindy and Emmet (and Mike and Jason) would be fast friends.

The project began with Mike revisiting the MC-909 sequencer he had as a kid. He started creating beats on the MC-909 again to the point of compulsion. “I just couldn’t get enough of it. I always loved the MC-909 and its old school sounds. I was going through a lot at that time and it was really therapeutic.” says Mike of working with the MC-909 groove box on this project. Mike enlisted his old band mate and fellow Berklee alumni Jay Hodgson for production help on the “Rock The Mic” track. Jay later mastered the rest of the album after Loewenstein got involved.

The drums, bass, and guitar parts that Loewenstein brought to the project combined with the MC-909 beats and infectiously rhythmic nature of Mike’s vocals are the perfect combination. Loewenstein once again proves his production skills are a force to be reckoned with. The finished product has a bad ass sound that is edgy but doesn’t take itself seriously. There’s something about “Price Tag” that evokes the vibe of Napoleon Dynomite’s dance routine and Beck’s “loser” track. This album leaves little doubt that dork is the new cool.
